Times in the healthcare industry are rapidly changing and with these rapidly changing times comes increased complexities in the medical field as a whole. Meaning, that defining why healthcare leadership is important is more crucial than ever.

Leaders in the healthcare industry must be flexible, inclusive, and smart with their time when attempting to lead an organization toward the road of success. It’s pertinent that the administrative personnel and other leaders in your company adapt to the diverse changes your organization may be facing and set the grounds for others in the company to understand these changes well.

The key here is communication. Whether it’s with managers, supervisors, or all employees in the organization, you need to have clean and clear communication to ensure your business meets and exceeds its goals.

Even if the heads of your organization are well-educated, professional, and have a great work ethic, if they don’t have the skills to lead then they won’t be able to inspire and drive the team members under them to achieve their all.

Healthcare and Situational Leadership

Situational Leadership is an approach that embraces the idea that different situations call for different leadership styles. Situational leaders in healthcare typically examine tasks put before them and determine which leadership approach makes the most logical sense. So if a staff member is learning a new task for which they might not possess all the skills or knowledge, situational leaders may give many directions but also offer the support necessary to overcome the task at hand. But if a member of staff already has the skills or knowledge necessary for the task, then a situational leader may delegate responsibility and offer minimal guidance and support for that staff member.

Situational leadership is broken down into four very distinct leadership approaches:

Telling: Leaders give directions about what to do and how to do it.

Selling: Leaders convince people to buy into their visions by interacting with them and selling their ideas.

Participating: Leaders encourage individuals to get involved by sharing their ideas and engaging in the decision-making process.

Delegating: Leaders delegate responsibilities for completing a task and offer only limited input.

When assessing organizational success, leaders look at several factors for deciding which leadership style is most optimal to deploy. They may break down the task at hand and the nature of the team that needs to complete it.

The people behind the creation of the theory behind situational leadership suggest that leaders examine the maturity levels of the individuals or groups under their delegation before choosing how to approach them. In which case, maturity refers to people’s competence and knowledge levels. The different maturity levels are as shown below:

Level 1: Limited skills, knowledge, or willingness to carry out a task.

Level 2: Willingness and enthusiasm to carry out a task but limited ability.

Level 3: Competent skill levels to complete a task, but an absence of initiative.

Level 4: Advanced skill level and a high level of motivation.

As a situational leader you know and understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to management doesn’t always work. Healthcare executives can derive a lot of value from employing a leadership style that offers flexibility in addressing the complex social situations of the workplace.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the demand for medical and health services managers is expected to grow by a staggering 18% by 2028. This is a rate that is much faster than across most other occupations. This 18% makes up a whopping 71,600 health services management positions across the United States.
